Olympic Bowl, Teton Pass

Laura Christensen grew up around traditional rural and Midwestern ideals, such as polite actions, hard work, and small communities. These influences expanded to include the metropolitan buzz of New York City, airy valleys and rugged peaks of the Rocky Mountains, older mountain woods and rivers of New England, fifteenth century Italian frescoes, family gatherings, friends, telemark skiing, and maple syrup.

At Saint Louis University she majored in Economics and German. At University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, Art History was her focus. Then in 1997 she completed the Masters of Fine Arts from Utah State University in Logan.

Her first art exhibit opened in 1990 – a solo show. Since then she’s exhibited many places, including Utah Museum of Fine Arts in Salt Lake City, The Tweed Museum of Art in Duluth, Minnesota, Southern Vermont Arts Center in Manchester, and Offenes Haus Oberwart in Oberwart, Austria. Some of her most recent exhibits include [re]Collections at The Art Center of the Capital Region in Troy, New York, 2005, and Boxed Sets: Assembling Objects, Images, and People in Kidspace at MASS MoCA (Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art), 2007.

To make ends meet along the way, she has worked as an artist’s assistant, waited tables, co-managed an art gallery, and even helped take the 2000 U.S. Census. For seven years, she served as Visual Arts Education Coordinator at MASS MoCA, and seasonally with the museum’s Art Fabrication and Installation crew.

Recently she left MASS MoCA to focus more on her own art career. She is also Visiting Associate Professor of art at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA).

Laura’s home in North AdamsĀ is happily shared with her supportive and playful husband and fellow artist, Greg Scheckler, and two purring cats, Jupiter and Masaccio.
