Fairytales of the public garden

A solo show featuring twelve new artworks inspired by Boston Public Garden.

The exhibition took place in Boston City Hall Mayor’s Gallery in March – April, 2024.

The works of art were inspired by features in Boston Public Garden, such as the annual tropical plant displays, the Boy & Bird fountain, the historic swan boats, and the charming Ducklings sculpture.

I made the artworks by drawing or painting directly onto the surface of antique photographic portraits dating back to the early years of the Garden. The images were faint solar enlargements altered and filled in with charcoal and ink by 19th century artisans. I added my own marks of charcoal and paint to theirs.

As the Garden is both preserved and reinvented by additional plantings and new visitors, I reimagine the old photographs. Explore my Fairytales of the Public Garden.
